In-Line Brix Measurement Upgrade for Jam Production Using KxS Refractometer

Background

Process Instrument Solutions was approached by a premier supplier of processing equipment for the UK food and drinks industry to support improvements to an existing jam production process. The focus of the project was to enhance quality control within stainless steel vessel recirculation lines by introducing in-line Brix measurement using KxS Technologies refractometers.

Challenge

At the time, the site was measuring pH and Brix by manually taking samples from the process line. This involved emptying product, testing it offline, and discarding the sampled material. The process typically took up to 45 minutes, during which production continued without real-time feedback. Only once the results were available could operators make adjustments to correct pH and Brix levels, leading to product waste, process delays, and reactive quality control.

Solution

Process Instrument Solutions implemented modifications to the existing stainless steel recirculation lines to allow installation of a KxS Technologies refractometer. The refractometer was installed directly into the recirculation line using a custom-built insertion with a tri-clamp fitting, designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing 1.5″ pipework.

This configuration enabled continuous, in-line Brix measurement with no need for manual sampling, eliminating product waste and process downtime. The refractometer also provides advanced features including sensor diagnostics, remote fault finding, maintenance alerts, and configurable alarm set points.

Result

The introduction of in-line Brix measurement has transformed the customer’s quality control process. Manual sampling and associated product waste have been eliminated, while real-time measurement allows immediate process adjustments, improving consistency and efficiency. The solution reduces downtime, supports proactive maintenance planning, and delivers long-term value through a single, robust instrumentation investment. Overall, the customer now benefits from improved product quality, reduced waste, and a more efficient, data-driven process.
