Profibus Communication: A Key Element in Industrial Networks
Profibus communication is a digital network that facilitates communication between field sensors and control systems or controllers. The term “Profibus” stands for “Process Field Bus.” It has become the most widely used industrial network globally, supporting industrial process control, motion control, automation, and safety networks.
Profibus operates using a master-slave communication model, which structures the control network components. In this system, the master device maintains unidirectional control over all connected slave devices and processes.
Master Device
The primary function of master devices is to manage the bus. Consequently, they can transmit messages without waiting for remote requests. These devices are often referred to as active stations. By controlling the bus, the master ensures smooth communication and efficient data exchange.
Slave Device
Slave devices are usually peripheral components such as sensors, transmitters, and actuators. These devices allow the master to send and receive messages. Unlike the master, slave devices are known as passive stations because they wait for instructions from the master before sending data.
Two Main Profibus Versions
There are two primary Profibus versions commonly used in industrial networks:
Profibus DP (Decentralized Peripherals)
Profibus DP is specifically designed for high-speed data communication. It connects automation control systems with distributed I/O at the device level, ensuring efficient and fast communication in industrial settings.
Profibus PA (Process Automation)
Profibus PA is tailored for process automation. It allows sensors and actuators to connect over a single common bus line, even in intrinsically safe zones. This makes it ideal for environments requiring high levels of safety and reliability.
